Coney Island to get a new ride in 2021
'The Phoenix' will rise from the ashes of this garbage year (which also happened to have been the theme park's 100th anniversary).
Coney Island was supposed to celebrate its 100th anniversary of the Wonder Wheel this year. But then 2020 happened and the Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park never opened at all this summer and everything sucked, the end.
Only it’s not the end! The centennial celebration will instead be held in the summer of 2021, and along with it will come some actual news that doesn’t suck: A new rollercoaster called Phoenix will be opening to mark the occasion, reports the USA Today in a roundup of the “most-anticipated roller coasters of 2021.” We’ll take any ride that involves leaving the house in pants at this point.
“It’s an important time to rebuild,” Deno “DJ” Vourderis, a third-generation member of the family that owns and operates the park, told the paper. “We’re betting on the future of New York City and Coney Island.”
About the 68-foot-tall ride itself, Vourderis adds: ““It’ll be about as upside down as you can go for a family coaster.” So, you know, save the Nathan’s for after.
