Looklyn: A Williamsburg artist flaunts her amazing technicolor dreamcoat
Kira Ryter, an artist and designer who recently moved from Chicago, shows off a coat of many colors she made from an old blanket
Personal style isn’t the same thing as fashion. It’s … more personal. It’s rooted in self, an outward expression of attitude, vibe, swag, panache, aspiration, time and place. In this semi-regular series called Looklyn, we hold a mirror up to the borough to show us how we dress now … and what it tells us about who we are.
Here, photographer Johnny Cirillo, introduces us to Kira Ryter, who made this amazing coat herself. Read more about her below:
Name: Kira Ryter
Age: 23
Occupation: Artist/designer
Where are you heading?: Walking to a friend’s place and grabbing coffee on the way over. Just enjoying the weather and the neighborhood.
Fashion inspirations: Mostly based in historical 17th century garments as well 1970s-’90s vintage. I love seeing when trends come back and be mixed with new things. I also love brands and designers that do gender neutral designs and play with color and construction.
About the fit: It was a blanket I found at a thrift store and I wanted to see if I could remember and practice my crochet skills. I spent two days taking it apart and five re-stitching it together to be a lighter weight statement piece coat with matching pants.
About Kira: I’m a recent grad and moved to New York from Chicago in August. I’ve spent my time since then working on exploratory projects like paper-mâché sculptures, painted clay rings, corsets, and other garments based on what kinds of material I can find around my apartment.
