Patti Smith to stream a live show from Brooklyn Museum March 9
The punk icon will perform in tribute to her one-time partner, the late Robert Mapplethorpe, as a treat to museum workers
If you’re working from home Tuesday, you might want to consider playing hooky for a couple hours: New York’s punk fairy godmother Patti Smith will perform at the Brooklyn Museum March 9, in honor of her one-time partner and roommate, late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
Tuesday’s performance of music and poetry will be part of the NYPopsUps festival series. And you don’t even need to be in Brooklyn to see it: The show, which is a special in-person performance just for the museum’s workers, will begin at 12:30 pm and will be viewable to the public via Instagram at @NYPopsUp.
Smith won a National Book Award for her memoir “Just Kids,” which chronicles her relationship with Mapplethorpe, who died on March 9 in 1989 due to complications from HIV/AIDS.
Hundreds of Covid-safe performances are springing up around the state through the NY PopsUps festival, which will run through Labor Day. The statewide initiative aims to revitalize both the live entertainment industry and the morale of New Yorkers.
