Looklyn: Where personal style meets ‘oneself reflection’
Stylist JaBarie Anderson on being a little bit André Leon, a little bit Kenzo and all JaBarie Anderson
Personal style isn’t the same thing as fashion. It’s … more personal. It’s rooted in self, an outward expression of attitude, vibe, swag, panache, aspiration, time and place. In this semi-regular series called Looklyn, we hold a mirror up to the borough to show us how we dress now … and what it tells us about who we are.
Here, photographer Johnny Cirillo introduces us to stylist JaBarie Anderson, on his way to a client meeting. Read more about him below.
Name: JaBarie Anderson
Age: 27
Occupation: Hair stylist/personal stylist
Where are you heading: Coffee & talk with a client.
Fashion Inpso: A big part of my fashion inspiration comes from the black power movement in the 60’s. As a young black stylist, I must also give some love to the fashion god himself André Leon [Talley]; he was the reflection of oneself I needed to see in order to be myself. Kenzo’s personal style along with my grandmother’s church swag have also impacted me in a big way. I love to call my style “oneself reflection.”
About the fit: Clean classic denim-on-denim tan vintage trench look which plays well with gold accessories, a black bag and blue belt… all white shoes to complete the look and your good to gooo!!! Clients and coffee baby.
About JaBarie: I am a personal and private stylist working with all walks of life. Growing up in Lansing, Michigan, we did not have a lot of money so many of my looks came second hand. I moved to New York in 2017 after an advanced education in cosmetology/fashion, with a career in hair and fashion now spanning 15 years. The struggles faced as a young African American gay man have kept me going to have dreams I never thought I could have. That’s why I am serious when it comes to self love and respect, knowing when to walk away and taking care of oneself; body, energy and mind. I love styling and working with new people, seeing someone be reborn and fall in love with themselves all over again makes my job so much more rewarding.
