This moving video collage captures a year of New York pandemic life
One year in, New Yorkers of all ages, boroughs and backgrounds share their thoughts, hopes and fears during the Covid-19 pandemic
This week marked the one-year anniversary of the fateful point in time when everything stopped: On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared that the spread of the Covid-19 virus constituted a global pandemic.
Journalist and filmmaker Shelby Wilder kept going, though: She documented the pandemic in real time, recording a wide range of voices of those affected throughout the course of the year.
The result, “Voices from New York,” is a moving collage that you can see here or below. New Yorkers from all backgrounds share what they fear, what they miss, what they mourn, what they look forward to—bringing to life the full scope of the tragedy and humanity of this past year against a backdrop of moving images from a pandemic-stricken city.
“As a New Yorker, it’s hard to not be jaded. But when the pandemic hit it shook the city and everyone in it to the core,” she tells Brooklyn Magazine, reflecting on “the common bond that we urban dwellers have experienced throughout this difficult time.”
