Looklyn: Life through rose-colored prescription glasses
Meet Elias, a Bedford Ave. flâneur with a thing for Western wear, cowhide, denim and jewelry
Personal style isn’t the same thing as fashion. It’s … more personal. It’s rooted in self, an outward expression of attitude, vibe, swag, panache, aspiration, time and place. In this semi-regular series called Looklyn, we hold a mirror up to the borough to show us how we dress now … and what it tells us about who we are.
Here, photographer Johnny Cirillo introduces us to real estate agent and Greenpoint fixture Elias Marte, on his way to a favorite vintage spot. Read more about him below.
Name: Elias Marte
Age: 31
Occupation: Real estate agent
Where are you heading?: Checking out a vintage store that I haven’t been in ages. Love walking on Bedford Avenue when the weather is sunny and warm.
Fashion inspo: My mom mainly, she had great style! She would ask my opinion on fits since I was a little boy. So I developed a passion for that. Besides that I love looking at pictures from ‘70s, 80s. ‘90s. I take inspiration from those eras. Also womenswear in general. I love taking cues from womenswear. For example: the western belt, the excessive jewelry.
About the fit: I have Levis 501 jeans, I ended my streak of not wearing jeans for like eight years. I’m wearing jeans again because I love belts. Denim work jacket. I love gold jewelry. My leather folder is handcrafted. Suede horsebit loafers, vintage. The cowhide belt buckle is currently my favorite accessory. Pink prescription glasses because life looks better in pink vision.
About Elias: Lifelong Greenpointer! Love collecting clothes/eyewear/jewelry. I have a pretty positive outlook on life. Big believer on having fun with your outfits. Personal style is key for authenticity!
