The scene at DMX’s Barclays Center memorial: ‘chaotic, beautiful, iconic’
The service itself was closed to the public, though hundreds of his Ruff Ryder fans turned out in the streets
A crowd of hundreds, if not thousands, gathered outside the Barclays Center and the surrounding neighborhoods Saturday to celebrate the life of late rapper DMX. The centerpiece of the afternoon was a procession of motorcycles that followed a monster truck carrying DMX’s coffin from Yonkers to Brooklyn ahead of a memorial that was closed to the public.
Born and raised in Yonkers, DMX (né Earl Simmons) died April 9 after suffering cardiac arrest following a drug overdose. Inside, Saturday’s service included a performance by Kanye West’s Sunday Service and a reunion of the Ruff Ryders group, who took the stage together at the ceremony to the tune of perhaps DMX’s most beloved track, “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem.”
Notable attendees included fellow NYC rap legend Jay-Z, Beyonce, Bobby Shmurda, and Busta Rhymes. Many others paid tribute online.
