Governors Ball 2021 lineup announced: Billie Eilish, A$AP Rocky, Post Malone to headline
Tickets go on sale Thursday for the three-day, tenth anniversary event. Also performing are Megan Thee Stallion, Phoebe Bridgers, DaBaby and others
The Governors Ball Music Festival announced its tenth anniversary lineup for September 24-26—safely in line with the city’s goal to be fully open by July 1. Headlining the three days are Billie Eilish, A$AP Rocky, and Post Malone.
For this year only, Governors Ball moves to a new location, Citi Field in Queens. All stages will be in the middle of the field, with a 360-degree setup promising no long walks or sound bleed between stages.
Usually the festival takes place in June, on Randall’s Island. Last year’s event—the technical tenth anniversary of the fest with performances by Vampire Weekend, Tame Impala, Stevie Nicks, and more—was cancelled due to Covid. Speaking of which, the pandemic has perhaps made us all more tolerant of endless lines, drunk bros, filthy porta-potties and $12 bottles of water. Also, perhaps not.
“Building a recovery for all of us means reconnecting with the iconic events that make New York City the greatest travel destination in the world,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement. “As more New Yorkers become vaccinated by the day, we’re proud to support arts and culture and welcome back Governors Ball and their fantastic lineup, including New York City’s own Princess Nokia, A$AP Rocky, and King Princess, among others.”
Other featured artists on 2021’s lineup include several big-name rappers, like DaBaby, Megan Thee Stallion, Young Thug and 21 Savage. Singer-songwriters Phoebe Bridgers and Leon Bridges will hit the stage as well. J Balvin, Amine, Ellie Goulding, Carly Rae Jepsen, Dominic Fike, Jamie xx, 100 gecs, Big Thief, Freddie Gibbs and the Alchemist, are also listed among the performers.
One-day and three-day passes go on sale Thursday at 12 p.m. EST, and tickets from summer 2020’s cancelled festival will roll over. Refunds are promised if the event is cancelled or rescheduled, with the option of rolling over to the June 2022 event.
“While we don’t know what may or may not be required come show day (e.g. proof of vaccination, proof of negative test, etc), rest assured that we are working closely with the City, and we will follow ALL state and federal health guidelines provided,” says the FAQ site.
The Governors Ball is the latest festival to announce its plans for later this year—joining the likes of South California’s Hard Summer, Tennessee’s Bonaroo, and Vegas’ Life is Beautiful 2021 festivals.
