Looklyn: Meet Jaylor, who is ‘glamorous, but always prepared’

Personal style isn’t the same thing as fashion. It’s … more personal. It’s rooted in self, an outward expression of attitude, vibe, swag, panache, aspiration, time and place. In this semi-regular series called Looklyn, we hold a mirror up to the borough to show us how we dress now … and what it tells us about who we are.

Here, photographer Johnny Cirillo introduces us to Jaylor, who aspires to be a social media planner in the music industry but in the mean time is still figuring it all out, “like everybody else.” Read more about him below.

Name: Jaylor Satta-Ellis
Age: 25
How I identify:  He/him/his. I’m also a PMT (pretty mixed thing): Native Hawaiian, Thai, French, and Tahitian.
Occupation: Social media planner
Where I’m heading: I want to be a social media planner in the music industry. I love music. R&B especially! It would be cool to work for a major artist or record label one day. In this picture, I just got off of work, I was feeling myself, and was headed to a skate shop to help pick out trucks for my friend lol. Don’t let the heels deceive you. Short answer/what I like to tell people, “I’m on my way to do some hot girl shit.”
Fashion inspo: Instagram and TikTok mainly, but I draw my inspiration from anything street style, drag queens, hip-hop dancers and vintage style. I like people that take risks. I like playing with color and androgyny—just being a chameleon really. But Rihanna said it best in her Fenty show: “It’s a mood thing,” because my mood widely influences what I’m wearing day-to-day. I guess that’s why they call it a form of expression.
About the ‘fit: With spring hitting, I felt like pink was the vibe. Usually I thrift my pieces, but had a “treat yourself” moment and splurged on some pink boots. Cropped jacket for functionality because it was warming up, and a pink bag to hold my sanitizer, disposable camera, extra mask, and phone charger. Glamorous, but always prepared.
About me:  Born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, I grew up in nature, but was naturally drawn to the city. Ironically, I had no sense of fashion growing up. I was always in t-shirts and shorts and had to wear a uniform in high school. I like New York because there’s this energy that emphasizes the fact that you can be whatever the fuck you want. I’m drawn to it, and like everybody else, still figuring out what that is.
