Movies With a View returns to Brooklyn Bridge Park in August
The outdoor film series returns for four nights in August with the theme of 'grit' and showcases 'Shaun of the Dead,' 'Akeelah and the Bee'
If you plotted it out just so, you could probably see a movie outdoors in New York every day this summer. Add to the mix of familiar favorites and drive-in classics the return of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy’s beloved Movies With a View series for its 21st season.
Four family-friendly movies will be screened at Harbor View Lawn at Pier 1 in Brooklyn Bridge Park throughout the month August.
On the slate are “Shaun of the Dead” (August 5), “Patti Cake$” (August 12), “Akeelah and the Bee” (August 19), and “Karate Kid” (August 26), all of which are centered around the Conservatory’s theme of “grit.”
These films feature “heartwarming, irreverent, hilarious, and uplifting underdog stories that celebrate human perseverance and resilience, and overcoming adversity,” according to the Conservatory. Nancy Webster, executive director of Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy, called Movies With A View the Conservancy’s “signature summer event,” which has drawn more than 650,000 New Yorkers to free films since its inception over two decades ago.
Films will be preceded by DJ sets and short films starting at 6:00 p.m that will last until the movies begin at sunset (around 8:30). The Conservancy will also be partnering with Smorgasburg to provide food and drinks, including beer and wine, on the Pier 1 promenade throughout the evening.
The Conservancy recommends guests bring a blanket to sit on (chairs are not allowed, with the exception of wheelchairs) and to arrive early to each film because seating is first come first served and they expect the pier to reach capacity every week. Bike valet services will also be provided and captions will be included during every film for viewers that are hard of hearing.
“Brooklyn Bridge Park has been such an important refuge for so many the past year, and we are now very excited to welcome back one of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy’s most loved events,” says Eric Landau, president of Brooklyn Bridge Park. “Movies With A View is a fantastic outdoor activity and wonderful way for the entire family to enjoy Brooklyn Bridge Park this summer.”
