UPDATE: Brooklyn Steel has canceled the remainder of the LCD Soundsytem shows
The band had previously said it would play out its run of shows at Brooklyn Steel in the face of a wave of new cases
Brooklyn Steel announced on Saturday that they will be canceling the remainder of the LCD Soundsystem shows there.
The announcement comes days after the band made the controversial decision to complete its mini-residency at Brooklyn Steel, telling fans that it won’t be cancelling any shows despite the new wave of Covid-19 cases.
Now, the venue and the band has taken the step to cancel the remaining shows, which were to take placeSunday, Monday and Tuesday. A statement from the venue reads, “LCD Soundsystem’s shows at Brooklyn Steel on December 19, 20 and 21 have been cancelled. All tickets purchased via AXS will be automatically refunded—there is no action required if you purchased your tickets via AXS online or by phone.”
The decision to cancel comes after the band received some flack for a Twitter statement (sans capital letters) released on the day that New York State announced its highest single-day count of new cases. The group wrote “we said we would play, and people are coming, so we are playing.”
As written, the statement did appear to concede that perhaps attending a large event full of screaming and shouting people might not be the best idea if you’re uncomfortable about the whole Covid thing. “But let’s be very, very clear — we are not saying by playing that we think it’s not a place you can catch covid or anything else, really,” they wrote.
The cancellation comes announced that nearly 22,000 people have tested positive for the virus on Saturday—surpassing Friday’s record-breaking day. Brooklyn Steel joins a flurry of New York shows and venues announcing cancellations. Baby’s All Right in Williamsburg said it’s “gonna take a chill” until its New Year’s Eve party and cancelled any shows until then.
In August, rock legend Neil Young, who pulled out of Farm Aid this year, declared in an opinion column that any large Covid-era concerts are “irresponsible,” saying they amounted to “super-spreader events.”
LCD Soundsystem, began its month-ish long residency in November, making the Brooklyn band’s first live performances since 2018 (and second since its farewell tour in 2011), so fans have been flying in from around the country to catch them. Hence the initial reasoning that those fans “would likely be very, very irate if we cancelled all of the sudden.”

The band itself has not yet released a statement about the cancelation.
Disappointed fans will still be able to see the band in a star-studded holiday special on Amazon Music December 22.
