‘For the Birds’ installation brings 30 funky birdhouses to Brooklyn Botanic Garden
The exhibit is meant to make a point about the threat to our bird population from overdevelopment. Bonus: there's a bodega birdhouse
Brooklyn Botanic Garden has gone to the birds.
More than two dozen birdhouses will be popping up all over the garden June 11 for an exhibit called “For the Birds,” which highlights the connections between birds and plants. BBG recruited international artists to build the birdhouses with designs inspired by the birds that can be found around the borough.
According to the BBG, each “birdhouse provides an opportunity to learn more about birds and their habitats through the eyes of artists working with a variety of materials and points of view.”
The creative little houses reflect a wide array of designs, including a “Birdega,” created from a Brooklyn artist, and a book-inspired birdhouse from Warby Parker. A map posted online displays their locations.
Visitors can also be guided through the exhibit with an audio project called “For the Birds: The Birdsong Project,” a multi-album collection of music inspired by birds from composer Randall Poster, who has worked with directors Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese and Todd Haynes.
“I see this project as a great way to draw attention to the crisis around bird life,” he told the Guardian. “Birds are under tremendous threat from the overdevelopment of the planet. It’s destroying their habitats and disrupting their migratory patterns. There’s also a problem with all the glass buildings that keep their lights on at night. Millions of birds get killed smashing into them.”
Anyway, the exhibit is on display until October 23.
