No thanks necessary: Here are 13 things to do this weekend

Can you feel it? The holiday season is officially here. It’s Thanksgiving weekend and, what’s more, Hanukkah and Christmas overlap next month, making Turkey Day the far calmer holiday by comparison. Enjoy your tryptophan-induced nap this week … it may be the last time you’ll sleep until January.

Brooklyn will become a relatively quiet oasis this weekend for those of us who stay put. Holiday markets, Christmas tree sales, and opportunities to donate to our less fortunate neighbors are aplenty in this week’s event roundup.

If you’re not too drained, we suggest seeing Omar Apollo at Kings Theatre on Sunday. He’s been on repeat since I heard his Tiny Desk concert in September.

Friday, November 25

Donate to St. Nick Fridge in Bushwick
Anytime
Did you buy one too many cans of Le Sueur peas for Thanksgiving? Consider donating fresh, uncooked food and canned items to the St. Nick Fridge in Bushwick. The fridge is community-run and operated all year and needs extra hands and donations through the holidays. Find more information on their Instagram and you can bring food to 176 St. Nicholas Ave.

The Old First Nursery School Tree Sale
9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., every Friday through Sunday until December 18
Cheer up, Charlie. The fir sold at The Old First Nursery School’s Tree Sale in Park Slope is better than that ratty branch used by the Peanuts gang. Choose from trees of all sizes provided by a Brooklyn-based distributor. And 100 percent of proceeds go to The Old First Nursery School, the oldest cooperative nursery school in New York City. If a tree isn’t what you’re after, there are plenty of wreaths, garland and mistletoe too. There’s also a raffle with $2,000 in prizes, including Broadway tickets. 729 Carroll Street.

The Makers Show Holiday Market at City Point
11 a.m. to 7 p.m., every Friday through Sunday until December 18
For its third holiday season, The Makers Show Holiday Market will feature over 60 local vendors, dance parties for kids, cookie decorating, and workshops like ugly sweater-making, with visits from Santa. The Makers Show is rooted in social justice with their commitment to promoting equity and community investment through local marketplaces. ESG, Sister Nancy and Sunny Cheeba
6:30 p.m.
Post-punk electro-funk Bronx legends ESG will be telling everyone at Eslewhere “You’re No Good” Friday night as they top a stellar Brooklyn bill. Sampled by everyone from TLC to Wu-Tang Clan to the Beasties and more, ESG’s influence on the contemporary soundscape is incalculable. Also performing is Sister Nancy, the Jamaican dancehall empress behind the classic “Bam Bam.” Tickets start at $40.79, 599 Johnson Ave.

Saturday, November 26

Children’s Pizza Making Workshop
10 to 11 a.m.
Fornino’s is coming to Time Out Market to teach kids how to craft the perfect pie. Each parent and child will be given dough, toppings, their own workstations, chef hats and aprons to make their culinary masterpieces. When you’re all done, there’s a sparkling pomegranate toast, a goodie bag to-go and two complimentary tickets to Jane’s Carousel, which is right outside of the market. 55 Water Street. Storytime for kids at the Sunset Park Library
10:30 to 11 a.m.
Stop by the Sunset Park Library on Saturday for a break from all the bustle. Kids are encouraged to bring their favorite book and librarians will have books to share as well. Stories, music, and rhymes will be enjoyed by all. All ages welcome. 4201 4th Ave.

Watch “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (again)
11 a.m.
Williamsburg favorite Nitehawk Cinema brings back this 1980s classic “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” on Saturday. Nosh on some of Brooklyn’s secret-best nachos while watching a young Matthew Broderick duck out of class one last time before graduation. 136 Metropolitan Ave. Tickets are $15.50.

Bed-Stuy’s Winter Wonderland Market returns
2 to 8 p.m.
After a long winter’s nap since 2019 (thanks, pandemic), Bed-Stuy’s Winter Wonderland Market returns for a month of shopping, live entertainment, fashion showcases, and live music from local DJs. The Bed-Stuy Gateway BID will do a ribbon cutting ceremony to kick off the market at 2 p.m. This year’s market opens on Small Business Saturday to help Bed-Stuy kickstart the holiday retail season and help the community recover from the pandemic. Janeane Garofalo hosts Prime-Time Comedy
4 to 8 p.m.
TGIF (Thank God it’s Finally … Over). Laugh off that turkey belly at Prime-Time comedy in Brooklyn, an afternoon of stand-up hosted by Janeane Garofalo and featuring comics Damien Lemon, Sergio Chicon, Sarah Cooper, Bryan Mckenna at Eastville Comedy Club. Tickets start at $30, 487 Atlantic Ave.

Dirty Circus Variety Show

Crafted & curated by House of Yes Co-Founder Anya Sapozhnikova, the Dirty Circus Variety Show will unfold in three acts. “A variety show dedicated to the raw & the raunchy,” this is not for the faint of heart. Dyker Heights Christmas Light Tours

Dyker Heights turns into an over the top homage to Christmas this time of year lights, life-sized Santas, sleighs, snowmen, and Christmas carols blasted from loudspeakers. Tours by foot, bus, and even limos are available in English and Spanish and offered at various price points.

Sunday, November 27

Tribute to Leslie Jordan
8 p.m.
“How y’all doing?” Leslie Jordan would ask us every day on Instagram during Covid. Sadly, Jordan left this mortal coil on October 24 and while may be gone, in Brooklyn he’s not forgotten. Jordan will be receiving a posthumous tribute worthy of the OG southern, sissy queen he was on Sunday. Drag queen Misty Meaner and actor Blake McAlister are performing at C’mon Everybody as Karen Walker and Beverley Leslie from “Will & Grace” join in to help the queer community laugh through tears as they pay tribute to a real one gone too soon. 21+. 325 Franklin Ave. Tickets are $12.36.

Omar Apollo at Kings Theatre

This fall, Omar Apollo gave one of the best Tiny Desk concerts in recent memory. Now, Apollo is coming to Brooklyn with his “The Prototype Tour” at Kings Theatre on Sunday.
