Afropunk announces 2023 lineup — and a new location in Greenpoint
The annual Black music and culture festival is moving from its historical perch in Fort Greene
Afropunk is coming back this summer with a fresh lineup and, a little surprisingly, a new location.
The annual festival, a self-styled “unapologetically fierce celebration of Black culture and music,” is moving from its usual perch at Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene to the Skyline Drive-In in Greenpoint, organizers announced this week. The two-day event is happening on August 26 and 27 from noon until 10 p.m.
Headliners this year include Vince Staples, Flying Lotus, Jazmine Sullivan, Joey Bada$$, among others. Tickets are now on sale and cost about $162 (including fees) for general admission and more than $500 for VIP tickets that also includes a boat ride.
In a release, organizers said that the new venue “provides a picturesque location for the performances” and its exhibitions, including its Spinthrift Market and food offerings. “Afropunk will transform the space, adding lawns, trees, and other shade structures to allow for a soothing and soulful day outside,” they said.
This year’s theme for the new locale is “Circus of Soul,” which will transform the “riverside blacktop into a carnivalesque exhibition that spotlights all aspects of Black creativity, soundtracked by music that speaks to the heart of the Black experience.”
Afropunk first launched in 2005 at Brooklyn Academy of Music and was an extension of James Spooner’s seminal 2003 film “Afro-Punk,” a documentary about the then-little-examined and appreciated Black punk subculture.
The festival has grown and evolved over the years, becoming a global brand with events in Brazil, Miami and Minneapolis.
