Mission Chinese is closing its Bushwick location after four years
The trailblazing and troubled restaurant is closing up shop in Bushwick, marking the infamous eatery's total exit from the city
Mission Chinese is closing up shop in Bushwick, marking the headline-making restaurant’s exit from the city.
Calling the past two years “astoundingly challenging,” the restaurant said it made the “difficult decision to close” by the end of July, ending a four-year run in the spot next to nightclub Elsewhere.
“None of this could have been possible without the strength and resilience of our Mission Chinese Bushwick team,” the restaurant wrote on its website. “An incredible group of people who have each in their special way contributed a key ingredient to building this unique team dynamic.”
The restaurant was headed by chef Danny Bowien, which blended traditional Asian food with American staples, like kung pao pastrami, all while served in a funky atmosphere. Its Lower East Side location closed in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, while its San Francisco location remains open.
Bowien and his partners came under fire in recent years for accusations of permitting a toxic workplace environment that turned a blind eye to verbal abuse and, according to some employees, racial discrimination.
For the final few weeks of service, Mission Chinese will be serving dishes inspired from its upcoming vegan cookbook. Reservations are still available.
