Brooklyn Heights’ Happy Days Diner closes after more than 20 years
The Montague Street staple has reportedly not been able to pay rent since February 2020 due to pandemic-induced strains
The happy days are over for a Brooklyn Heights stalwart: The Happy Days Diner on Montague Street appears to have permanently closed after more than two decades in business.
The 24/7 spot was best known for its diner faves, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner all day and every day. However, it appears to be yet another Covid casualty, forcing it permanently close its doors late last month.
Court filings uncovered by Brownstoner show that it hasn’t paid rent since February 2020, and months of legal tangling over that has finally forced the landlord has taken possession of the property. The diner and the building’s owner appear to have reached a settlement over unpaid rent, declaring that Happy Days Diner could remain open until November 30, per Brownstoner.
The Happy Days Diner phone number has been disconnected and its Seamless order page has been wiped. It was perhaps best known for its 1950s-themed menu and interior, that included Fonzie Burgers and vintage ads for cars and movies.
Restaurants, and in particular diners, have been hard following the pandemic. According to one estimate, about 4,500 restaurants around the city have shuttered since the onset of the pandemic. Another notable recent casualty is the beloved Slovakian fried burger spot Korzo on Fifth Avenue in South Park Slope, which closed a week ago.
