Mekelburg’s in Clinton Hill is closing its doors after a nearly decade in business
The beloved market and restaurant has been a neighborhood favorite for its hearty sandwiches and dishes
Mekelburg’s, a Clinton Hill market and restaurant known for its comfort food and craft beer, is closing after a nearly decade in business.
The team “tearfully” shared the news on Instagram, announcing that March 31 will be its last day in business. Its location Williamsburg’s Domino Park will remain open.
“We’ve loved every minute of being in this amazing community, from our phenomenal staff, the thousands of pounds of chicken we’ve fried, our regulars, the trivia nights, all of 2020 … and especially to those who just wanted a great beer and tasty food at the end of the day,” the statement said.
“Please help us close close Mekelburg’s out with a bang,” the owner insisted. Trivia night and a “small part” of the market will move across the street to Guevara’s, a coffee shop operated by Mekelburg owners Alicia Guevara and Daniel Mekelburg.
No specific reason was shared about why it’s closing, however it joins growing list of Brooklyn institutions that have shuttered their doors in recent years citing the challenging economics of the post-pandemic era. Brooklyn Magazine has reached out for more details.
Its loyal customers gravitated toward its home cooked dishes, like “mek and cheese” and hearty sandwiches that ranged from meatballs, to roast beef, and of course fried chicken.
Fans were, of course, saddened by the news. “The end of a legendary era,” one follower commented. Another added: “This sucks. A lot.”
