Brooklyn Army Terminal among first ‘mass vax’ sites opening Sunday
The mayor says there will ultimately be a total of 160 vaccine sites across the city by the end of this week and 250 by the end of the month
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Wednesday that 24/7 vaccination sites are opening this Sunday at Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park and in the Bronx at Bathgate Industrial Park. The vaccine will only be available to recipients eligible under the state’s first phase of priority distribution.
The mayor also announced the opening on Sunday for three smaller health department vaccine hubs at Bushwick Educational Campus in Brooklyn, Hillcrest High School in Queens, and South Bronx Educational Campus in the Bronx, with the combined capacity to serve 30,000 people.
De Blasio said in his statement that there will ultimately be a total of 160 vaccine sites across the city by the end of this week and 250 by the end of the month. Those include hospitals, community health clinics and urgent care centers in addition to the city’s vaccine hubs and mega sites.
“With mass vaccination centers, we will be providing 24/7 vaccination in all five boroughs and dramatically increasing the pace of vaccination,” he said in a release. “This is a race against the clock, and we need our State and Federal partners to give us the flexibility and supply we need to reach the maximum number of people as quickly as possible.”
One of the city’s first two 24/7 “mass vax” sites will begin operating at the Brooklyn Army Terminal Annex Building this weekend, though appointments will be required.
Twelve additional vaccine hubs will open Friday, January 15, including at three Brooklyn locations: Abraham Lincoln High School in Brighton Beach, Canarsie High School and George Westinghouse Vocational High School in Downtown Brooklyn.
