Crown Heights max vax site opens to all eligible Brooklynites
As Medgar Evers College expands its Covid-19 vaccine offering, Mayor de Blasio complains of out-of-towners taking advantage of NYC
As confused as the rollout has been to date, New York City has now administered 2 million Covid-19 vaccine doses—and now there are even more ways to get an appointment.
The mass Covid-19 vaccine site at Medgar Evers College in Crown Heights is open for appointments from any eligible Brooklynite. Up to 3,000 people can get vaccinated a day at the site. Medgar Evers had previously been open only to those in certain surrounding ZIP codes, in an effort to target communities with lower vaccination rates.
And yet, there has been no shortage of communities horning in on New York—and Brooklyn’s—slotted doses. It turns out the city’s sites have been a popular spot for out-of-towners—to the dismay of Mayor Bill de Blasio. On Monday, de Blasio reported that more than 42 percent of vax recipients at the Javits Center lived outside the city. At Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, 75 percent are from out of town.
“NYC isn’t getting our fair share,” said Bill Neidhardt, de Blasio’s press secretary, in a tweet. “That just isn’t acceptable.”
Appointments at both the Javits Center and Aqueduct Racetrack sites are open to any New York State resident. At the Medgar Evers College site, however, vaccines will be restricted to just those living in Brooklyn.
