Brooklyn Tweets of the Week: Magical $100K homes edition
A roundup of (some of) our favorite locally sourced tweets
The New York Times released their editorial endorsement interviews with the city’s mayoral candidates this week.
Recent Brooklyn Magazine podcast guest Kathryn Garcia got the Grey Lady’s official nod. But that was overshadowed by some viral dumbassery by a few of her opponents: Among the slate of questions asked by Times’ Mara Gay of each contender was “Do you happen to know what the median sales price for a home is in Brooklyn right now?” Shaun Donovan, former housing secretary and budget director under President Barack Obama, guessed $100,000. Ray McGuire, longtime investment banker and former executive at Citigroup, said “somewhere in the $80,000 to $90,000 range.”
We’d like to live in their Brooklyn.
In reality, they missed by a factor of 10. The median home price in Brooklyn is $900,000. The flubs caused an uproar on Twitter that spanned from gentle mockery to savage dragging.
Political scientist Paul Musgrave immediately thought of Lucille Bluth (RIP Jessica Walter):
It’s one house in Brooklyn, Michael, what could it cost–$100,000?

“Daily Show” writer Jason Gilbert and writer Lauren Hough took their new-found real estate knowledge to its logical conclusion:
Walking into my local real estate office, slapping a $20 bill on the table and saying “Get me a brownstone in Brooklyn Heights”

Whatever. I just found a jar of wheat pennies while packing so guess who’s about to be Brooklyn homeowner

Gimlet Media head Lydia Polgreen doubted $100,000 would would even get you a parking spot in the borough. But, according to Zillow, it turns out you can! Phew!
I mean, the other night I paid $16 in Brooklyn for a pre-mixed cocktail that tasted like cough syrup so I’m pretty sure $100K won’t even buy you a parking spot. https://t.co/1Yh3LbBbFq

Per @zillow, there is *one property* in all of Brooklyn available for $100,000.
It’s not a house. It’s not a townhouse. It’s not a condo or co-op. It’s not some one-room studio with a shared bathroom down the hall.
It’s a *parking space*.https://t.co/Ph6UxoTCIk https://t.co/5uvkHtPRaI

In 2015 some little kids on the street in Brooklyn stopped and yelled, “Out here looking like Rachel Dolezal!” And I stopped and full body shook with laughter. I cried laughing. They lost it completely. It was THE day that story broke. NYC schoolkids are undefeated. https://t.co/h7onIvgWQ5

i know the median price of a house in Brooklyn and can ride a bike and am therefore apparently overqualified to be mayor

Senator Rand Paul keeps forgetting that Dr. Anthony Fauci is from South Brooklyn. If I was Senator Paul, I would do my best not have all that smoke for him. https://t.co/JeNjG4Z3u6
