A demonstration organized by Brooklyn Liberation drew thousands Sunday to protest anti-trans legislation
Several thousand people gathered outside the Brooklyn Museum on Sunday for a protest organized by Brooklyn Liberation, a “grassroots collective that organizes in the name of Black trans liberation.”
The protest was an emergency response to a variety of legislation introduced by Republican lawmakers in more than 34 states specifically targeting trans-youth by restricting healthcare access and barring participation in youth sports. More than 100 such pieces of legislation have been introduced this year; 10 have been turned into law, according to the New York Times. Brooklyn Liberation also noted that there had been “more anti-trans bills passed this year than in the last 10 years combined.”
While addressing the crowd on Sunday, transgender and non-binary activist Shéár Avory said “We are here to say that we have a right not just to survive, but to thrive; to demand that our movements show up and center us.”
