Proposed Brooklyn Navy Yard rezoning would include a gym, museum, more
The creation of a Special Brooklyn Navy Yard District over three sites that could include a health club, classrooms, retail, offices and more
Imagine hitting the gym in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and maybe popping into a museum afterwards before going shopping. Last week, the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s application for rezoning was reviewed by the City Planning Commission, marking the next step in the lengthy zoning application approval process.
The application, viewable on the NYC planning portal, seeks to create a new Special Brooklyn Navy Yard District. While there are no specific plans yet, three potential sites of development listed on the application are on Kent Avenue, Navy Street, and Flushing Avenue. Plans for these sites include thousands of square feet for museums, classrooms, offices, retail stores, and community gathering. The development of these sites was first introduced in the Yard’s 30-year plan, released in 2018.
Currently, the 300-acre Yard houses over 450 businesses and employs over 11,000 people.
“I couldn’t be more excited about this project,” said City Planning chair Marisa Lago at the review. “I have fond teenage memories of wandering through the recently shuttered Brooklyn Navy Yard in the early ’70s. I’m only admitting this because I’m assuming the statute of limitations for breaking and entering has long passed.”
