From Xtina live to jazz in Fort Greene: 12 things to do in Brooklyn this weekend
Concerts in our parks. Sustainable fashion shows. High fashion art shows. Plus lots of drag. It's the weekend starting Sept 10
Look, summer isn’t officially over until September 22. School doesn’t start back up until next week. So technically we owe it to ourselves to squeeze the last bit of juice we can out of this weekend. (Even if that means just curling up with a book).
There’s plenty to do: Brooklyn Museum will kick things off by celebrating its full re-opening Friday, complete with a lineup of outdoor events and a new exhibit devoted to the House of Dior.
The weekend will wind down with the VMAs, which return to a live format—with an audience, no less–at the Barlcays Center. Tickets are tough to come by, but there will no doubt be a scene on the ground on Atlantic Ave.
Meanwhile, there are plenty of options to choose from in between. Here’s the rundown:
Friday, September 10
Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams
11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Opening Friday at the Brooklyn Museum and running through February 20, the exhibit explores the history of The House of Dior, which dates back to the turn of the 20th century, when Christian Dior founded the label. Tickets $10 to $25. While you’re at the museum stick around for Reopening: Community Appreciation Weekend. With the Museum fully reopening on Friday, they are celebrating with three days of free community programs packed with gallery talks, art activations, and family fun. See full lineup here.
Trippie Redd: Tripp At Knight Tour
7 p.m.
Head down to the Coney Island Amphitheater this Friday to rage with Trippie Redd. The Tripp At Knight Tour kicked off in August and features Iann Dior and emerging rapper SoFaygo. Tickets start at $40.
Undercurrent
2 to 9:30 p.m.
The long-awaited Brooklyn Undercurrent officially opens this weekend. The exhibition features over 40 musicians, artists, creatives, and nonprofits, including Bon Iver, Grimes, Jorja Smith, Khruangbin, Miguel, The 1975, Actress, Aluna, Jayda G, Mount Kimbie, and Nosaj Thing to present their reactions to the climate crisis through immersive multimedia installations. Tickets are $49 and available throughout the day. Children 5 and under are free with a ticketed adult. Read more here.
Saturday, September 11
Jazz Fest at Fort Greene Park Conservancy
3 p.m.
Celebrate the eleventh year of Fort Greene Park Jazz fest with a free concert hosted by Eric Fraizer and featuring performances from a variety of Fort Greene’s historic jazz ensembles. The show will take place on the eastern plaza of the monument near the visitor’s center.
House Of Saint Vegan Fashion Show
6:30 p.m.
In honor of (or to offer counter-programming for) NYFW, 3 Dollar Bill is throwing a sustainable fashion show with House of Saint Vegan. Music by Dj Skyshaker and Drag by The Bad Judies. General admission is $25, and all proceeds will be donated to the animal rescue Tamerlaine Sanctuary & Preserve.
LadyLand Festival featuring Christina Aguilera
7:30 p.m.
Brooklyn Mirage at Avant Gardner presents LadyLand, an outdoor queer music festival. With performances by Christina Aguilera, Caroline Polachek, Skin, Aquaria, and Nina Sky, this concert is not one to miss. Tickets start at $91 and are selling fast.
WizKid at Celebrate Brooklyn!
8 to 11 p.m.
Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter WizKid hits the Prospect Park Bandshell stage this Saturday. WizKid went global in 2016 after his collaboration with Drake, “One Dance,” soared to number one in 15 countries. His fourth album, Made in Lagos, dropped last fall. This benefit performance is part of BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival, and tickets are required for entry.
Bushwig 2021 Afterparty
11:30 p.m.
The Brooklyn Festival of Drag is back at The Knockdown Center in Queens on September 11 and 12. You can still celebrate the tenth anniversary of Bushwig without leaving the borough–just head to The Sultan Room after the show. Tickets are $20 and sell out fast!
Sunday, September 12
Second Sundays at Pioneer Works
12 to 7 p.m.
Second Sundays are back at Pioneer Works this September with an exciting lineup of programs and performances. Go solargazing with the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York, take a cooking class with auxilio space, check out the Pop-Up Synth Library courtesy of Synth Library NYC, and more! Admission to Pioneer Works is free with donations encouraged.
Catcher at The Knitting Factory
8 p.m.
Catcher’s visceral post-punk arrives at The Knitting Factory this sunday. The band is joined by fellow Brooklyn based musicians Turtlenecked and Programmique. Tickets start at $12.
22Gz, PNV Jay, Polo Perks at Elsewhere
7 to 10:30 p.m.
Head over to the Hall at Elsewhere to party with 22GZ–the pioneer of the Brooklyn drill scene. Joined by PNV JAY and POLO PERKS with a DJ set by HU DAT. This event is 16+ and tickets are $27.60
MTV Video Music Awards 2021
Preshow starts at 6:30 p.m.; broadcast begins at 8 p.m.
The MTV Video Music Awards will return to pre-pandemic form with a live broadcast at the Barclays Center. Performers include Doja Cat, Camila Cabello, Kacey Musgraves, Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo and Shawn Mendes.
