Regal UA Court Street suddenly closes after 20 years
True to form, the theater went out in the most chaotic way possible
The presumably bedbug-infested curtain has fallen for the Regal UA Court Street movie theater, which closed its doors Sunday after more than two decades of being a neighborhood mainstay.
Regal didn’t return Brooklyn Magazine’s request for comment explaining why it closed, but moviegoers that went to the theater’s final screening tweeted pictures of the facility being stripped of its movie posters. A sign was posted on its box office about its closure. Showtimes have also disappeared from its website.

Despite the theater being among the more under-maintained and places to see a movie, mourners wrote on Twitter how they’re going to miss the place. It was a critical gathering place and a cultural hub for a generation of locals. “This is really crazy. First kiss here, many a double, and triple feature. Way too many memories to count,” one person said.
“Was literally just talking about how I’ve never been to a movie here without the entire audience yelling their thoughts and/or fighting the whole time and for some reason I will miss it a lot?” another added.
A proposal discovered by internet sleuths shows that building, which also houses Barnes & Noble, might be redeveloped into a mall. Moviegoers won’t be without any options as three, much nicer theaters are located nearby including Cobble Hill Cinema, BAM and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Downtown Brooklyn.
