Brooklyn’s southern shoreline could be getting a makeover
The city has identified "gaps in the existing greenway routes" along Shore Parkway and others, and is suggesting ways to improve them
Fans of the outdoors, rejoice: More greenery could be coming soon to Brooklyn’s southern shoreline.
This week, the NYC Parks department and the Department of Transportation announced the completion of a study that identified “gaps in the existing greenway routes” and ways to improve them, which encompass about 150 miles throughout the city.
One of those areas is on Brooklyn’s Shore Parkway, specifically the route from Leif Erikson Park in Bay Ridge to Coney Island. If approved, the revamped greenway improves access to the waterfront. That route is already popular with bikers and joggers and offers sweeping views of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
“The waterfront along Shore Road in southern Brooklyn should be the crown jewel of our borough and I’m thrilled that we are finally taking concrete steps to invest and dream big to make this outer borough connection first class,” said New York State Senator Andrew Gounardes in a release.
However, the project doesn’t have the green light just yet. The Parks and the DOT are holding a virtual meeting on February 15 to review the plans with neighbors and it also needs funding.
