Tweets of the week: The Nets take MSG, the weather takes us by surprise
This week's tweets feature cameos from Adam Yauch, Julia Fox, a Guilded Age empress, and some uniquely Brooklyn fauna
Every week we at Brooklyn Magazine read the entire internet in order to curate (some of) our favorite tweets from the previous seven days. These are locally sourced, hand-crafted, organically grown, free range nuggets of wisdom and jest for the week ending Feb. 18.
Well the Nets had their first game without James Harden on Wednesday—against the Knicks in Madison Square Garden, no less—and emerged victorious, even despite a 28-point deficit at one moment. Twitter had a few thoughts. (The Nets were subsequently beaten by the Wizards the following night, but that makes a fun story less fun.)
Elsewhere, the co-founder of Threes Brewing had a specific take on Twitter about vaccine mandates, which provoked some (the words “crime against humanity” probably had something to do with that). On our own Instagram page, the news has sparked some … lively discussion—some of it is even thoughtful.
You wouldn’t know it today, but we started the week covered in snow. Thankfully Tek, half of the hip hop duo Smif-N-Wessun, was there to document it. Then it got nice out! Twitter had thoughts about that too.
Stick around for some interesting historical photos of our borough, one of which reminds us of Brooklyn’s elite Black community back in the Gilded Age (which has been portrayed accurately in the not-at-all-otherwise-clunky HBO melodrama “Gilded Age”). In more recent history, we’re treated to one of Beastie Boy Adam Yauch’s elementary school yearbook photos.
Plus some other … surprises. Enough words! Onto the tweets.

Things you love to see.

New York City’s in this weird space rn where some folks are saying it’s going down the tubes, others are saying it’ll emerge a stronger city from COVID, and then every day you get an email that’s like, ‘Here are 25 Michelin-starred restaurants that just opened in Brooklyn.’

There’s a neighbourhood in Brooklyn called GOWANUS and I love that it sounds like someone cheerleading their arsehole.

Well, that was fun. How about a walk down memory lane? History is fun! Without knowing it we wouldn’t repeat the mistakes of … oh, never mind.
Yes! Glad the show is exploring the Black elite of Brooklyn in the 1880s. I hope we get to meet Susan Smith McKinney Steward, Brooklyn’s first African American physician. #TheGildedAge #TheGildedAgeHBO pic.twitter.com/OjABSO3mDp
