Tweets of the week: A little levity and a lot of real life in Brooklyn
A selection of noteworthy and occasionally mood-altering tweets from a difficult week at home and abroad
Every week we at Brooklyn Magazine read the entire internet in order to curate (some of) our favorite tweets from the previous seven days. These are locally sourced, hand-crafted, organically grown, free range nuggets of wisdom and jest for the week ending Feb. 25.
It was a hard week but we made it through. The news of the day—which we will cover in more depth elsewhere—is acknowledged in our roundup of local tweets, even as daily life and all its absurdities continue to amuse, dismay and perplex us. Enjoy. And be good to each other.
Took this yesterday in Flatbush because it captures a mood: uncertain path toward dark & murky sky. Lit below with glowing, gritty hope that humanity can some day put war & pandemic & prejudice & hate & fascism behind us. pic.twitter.com/7woSNIL7dr

Nothing like reading about Russia invading Ukraine & threatening nuclear war while in NYC … & then hearing booms/seeing flashes

Speaking of greenways, devastated sidewalks are infrastructure! This route (Flatbush south of Ave V) has been in @NYC_DOT’s protected/greenway category for a long time, but…
Fixing it is in a Jamaica Bay greenway plan, but as a capital project not yet begun – 2030s?? pic.twitter.com/EVdeysxMrm

According to a study by the Corcoran Group, rents in Bed Stuy are up 10% since last year.
They’re up 22% in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill.
A whopping 48% in Prospect Heights.Brooklyn, this is unsustainable. Good Cause Eviction would limit rental increases to 3% or 1.5x the CPI. pic.twitter.com/Gn5vTL3c06

Mary Pinkett was the first Black woman elected to the New York City Council.
She was a strong voice for Black Americans, women, and workers throughout the city.
Serving from 1974 to 2001, she lived in Brooklyn her entire life.#BlackHistoryMonthhttps://t.co/ahEhsdAmlb

The Duesenberg racing team traveled to the Sheepshead Bay board track in Brooklyn, New York, for non-competitive speed trials in November 1919. The Duesenbergs were the last automobiles to run at the short-lived two-mile track that opened in 1915. pic.twitter.com/yNDIrkJEdG

I live in the Brooklyn neighborhood that is home to the largest diaspora of refugees and migrants from the former Soviet Union in North America. Everyone here—Tajik or Turkmen, Kyrgyz or Kazakh, Uzbek or Ukrainian—stands with the Ukrainian resistance.
I’m with my neighbors.
