Red Hook Tavern is asking for donations after a fire forced it to close
The restaurant, best known for its burger, is asking for donations
Red Hook Tavern is temporarily closed after a fire tore through the restaurant early Saturday and caused a significant amount of damage.
In a note posted on its website, the restaurant said that “what appears to be an electrical fire destroyed the basement and parts of the first floor.” Thankfully, no staff was present or injured during the fire.
Red Hook Tavern’s General Manager Rebecca Flynn started a GoFundMe account seeking $50,o00 to ensure its workers are “cared for during the rebuilding process” since the restaurant will remain closed for an unforeseeable amount of time.

“We hope to be a strong fixture of our neighborhood for years to come and must rely on the generosity of those we have taken care of along the way,” she wrote on the GoFundMe account, which has raised about $20,000 so far. “Please keep us in your thoughts as we get back on our feet.”
Supportive comments have been posted on its Facebook page. “My heart goes out. One of the best spots in NYC,” wrote one fan. “I’m so so sorry this happened. Hopefully insurance comes through in a big way,” another person said.
Red Hook Tavern opened in 2019 and became known for its classic American food, notably its burger, oysters on pickled ice, steak and cocktails. The restaurant was ensnared in some controversy last year after a waitress was fired for reportedly refusing to get the Covid-19 vaccine.
