Coney Island’s Luna Park reopens for the summer this weekend
Grab an egg cream and hop on the Cyclone as it turns 95. Temperatures might be in the 50s, but summer is almost here!
It might not feel like it, but summer is right around the corner. At least, that’s what the reopening of Luna Park seems to promise.
The Coney Island theme park opens for the season on Saturday at 11 a.m. with its annual egg cream christening of the historic 1927 Cyclone. This year, though, the wooden thrill ride is turning 95. And so 95 lucky guests will get an egg cream and a free ride, which usually costs $10 on “America’s most famous coaster.”
🌙✨🎢On 4/2/22 we’re kicking off the season with our Egg Cream Christening of the Coney Island Cyclone! On Opening Day we’ll also be giving 95 free rides on America’s most famous coaster, celebrating 95 years in Coney Island in 2022! 🥳 #lunaparknyc #coneyisland #OpeningDay pic.twitter.com/Zj4MFkJPCc

Also, for one day only on Saturday, Luna Park is selling wristbands that gives people access to unlimited rides for just $20—a bargain for a ticket that usually costs between $38 to $62 depending on the rider’s height.
New this year is a ride called the J2SK Coaster, a roller coaster slash log flume, which won’t be ready this weekend but the park says is “coming soon.” Theme park goers will also experience refreshed pedestrian plazas and a rope course.
Luna Park’s opening kicks off boardwalk season at Coney Island. However, this year, it’ll be without one of its more prominent personalities: Dick Zigun, the self-appointed, unofficial Coney Island mayor-for-life, who was recently let go from Coney Island USA, which he founded and runs the Mermaid Parade.
