The Brooklyn Marathon is this weekend (and so are these street closures)
More than 20,000 runners will flood the streets on a new course this year
More than 20,000 runners are flooding the streets Sunday for the 10th annual Brooklyn Marathon and Half Marathon, which is being run on a brand new course this year.
That means, however, tons of street closures to accommodate the 26.2-mile race. The route begins in the “hip North Brooklyn” (their words) neighborhood of Williamsburg, snakes through the waterfront giving runners “eye popping views of Manhattan,” continues through Crown Heights and Gravesend then ends in Prospect Park.
Non-runners will be affected with parking changes and blocked off streets. Closures will be done in waves to accommodate the different paces of runners and begin at 1 a.m. early Sunday and last to about 2 p.m.
Parts of major thoroughfares will be blocked off, including Bedford Ave. and Kent Ave. in Williamsburg, Flushing Ave. near the Navy Yards, various streets in Dumbo including Front St. and Water St., Flatbush Ave. in Prospect Heights and large parts of Eastern Parkway and Ocean Parkway. (A full list is available here.)
Marathon organizers say participants are “strongly recommended” to take public transportation. And non-runners will have access to so-called “cheer zones,” so bring your pom-poms and be relieved that your legs won’t feel like crap Monday.
