Books are Magic is adding a second location in Brooklyn Heights
Co-owners Emma Straub and Michael Fusco-Straub 'can't wait to bring an independent bookstore back to Montague Street'
Books are Magic is about to turn the page on a new chapter.
The beloved Carroll Gardens bookstore is soon opening a second store in Brooklyn, at 112 Montague St. in the heart of Brooklyn Heights. Scheduled to open in late October, the new spot is taking over the former locations of Fishs Eddy and Housing Works, giving the drab area a much needed pick-me-up.
Co-owners Michael Fusco-Straub and author Emma Straub wrote in an email to Brooklyn Magazine that customers and even real estate developers began asking when they would open another store almost immediately following its 2017 opening.
“We could hardly wrap our minds around the one space we already had, let alone entertain the idea of two,” the husband-and-wife duo wrote. “Even if we’d been ready, we weren’t interested in a high-gloss new building somewhere outside of our zip code.”
They admitted that their interest in expanding recently grew around Montague Street. “If you’re one of our local customers, you know it well — the beautiful buildings, the empty storefronts, and now, the croissants,” they said. After looking at about half a dozen stores, they found one that was “too good to say no to.”
“We can’t wait to open our doors this fall, and to take you back to the days of Cousin Arthur’s and Our Mutual Friend, and to bring an independent bookstore back to Montague Street,” they said. Loyal shoppers should expect friendly staff, a handpicked book selection, new merchandise and “some new surprises of its very own.”
However, don’t expect it to turn into a triology: “The family is complete. No more! Just these two,” they said.
