New Year’s Eve fireworks will return to Prospect Park after a 2-year absence
The roughly 40-year-old tradition takes place at Grand Army Plaza and is free for everyone
New Year’s Eve isn’t for another eight weeks, but Prospect Park has already made plans.
Fireworks are finally returning to Grand Army Plaza after a two-year Covid-forced absence. The roughly 40-year-old tradition is “Brooklyn’s most spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks celebration,” according to announcement that was made from Prospect Park Alliance, NYC Parks department and Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.
New Year’s Eve is on a Sunday this year, with the fireworks going off at midnight marking the arrival of 2023. Tickets for the free event are “recommended but not required,” organizers say.
“It’s not a Brooklyn New Year’s Eve without fireworks in Prospect Park,” Reynoso said in a statement. “What an honor it is to team up with Prospect Park Alliance to bring this beloved Brooklyn tradition back for another year, my first as president of the greatest borough in the world.”
In previous years, live music from a Brooklyn band performed and the spectacular drew tens of thousands of revelers. This event marks the first announcement of New Year’s Eve fireworks, with Brooklyn Bridge Park and Coney Island not announcing their plans just yet.
