Pig Beach is being forced out of its original Gowanus location
The popular barbecue spot is being forced to relocate due to rezoning, but pledges to stay in the borough
Pig Beach is shutting down its original Gowanus location after eight years above the canal, marking another surprising closure in Brooklyn’s restaurant scene.
The popular, dog-friendly barbecue spot announced on Instagram that its last day will be Friday, December 30, explaining that it was a victim of broader rezoning project overtaking the neighborhood in an effort to build more housing.
“Progress is always the way in NYC — and perhaps that’s part of its dynamic charm, the shiny new flipside to its timeless patina,” the restaurant wrote. “But along with the major facelift the whole Gowanus Canal area is about to undergo, so go many of the local businesses, and the employees that made them such an essential part of the neighborhood.”
The building at 480 Union Street the Pig Beach has called home was recently sold to Brooklyn-based developer Tankhouse, which has been buying up more properties in Gowanus, including the Green Building venue next to Pig Beach.
The restaurant said that it’s “left the door open” with the new landlords to ideally re-open Pig Beach in the future, however the owners said they are “vigorously seeking out a new place in Brooklyn.”
Co-owners Shane McBride and Matt Adboo were guests on “Brooklyn Magazine: The Podcast” in May, when Abdoo noted that the Gowanus of 2016 was hardly a hot ticket. “Now it’s some of the most sought after waterfront property in the entire city of New York, which is absolute insanity,” he said.
Pig Beach said some of its employees will moving to its other locations in Queens, West Palm Beach and its soon-to-open Louisville. Until its closure in two weeks, the restaurant promised “fun” to celebrate the end of an era.
“Thank you for your support then, now, and as we look ahead to our next Brooklyn chapter,” the owners told its fans. “It’s just ciao for now.”
