The ‘Museum of Failure’ is coming to Industry City
The traveling exhibit is aimed at highlighting "strange and useless" inventions created by the world's biggest brands
The “Museum of Failure” is coming to Industry City, and we’re not talking about de Blasio’s White House bid. Described as a “unique exhibition of failed products and services from around the world,” the traveling exhibit is aimed at highlighting “strange and useless” inventions created by the world’s biggest brands. Crystal Pepsi, anyone?
Around 160 products will be featured at the museum, which should take about an hour to explore. Some notable products include Colgate’s lasagna-flavored toothpaste, a handheld record player and even a spray-on condom that was a real idea about a decade ago. The rare collection of items isn’t meant to be mean spirited, the museum explains, rather “embracing failure and taking meaningful risks allows for real innovation and progress.”
The museum is curated Dr. Samuel West, who has a PhD in Organizational Psychology from a Swedish university. In a recent interview, he expanded on that thought saying is that companies have to “accept failure, because it usually takes several iterations before we get things right — most experiments fail.”
Museum of Failure opens March 17 and lasts until May 9. Tickets begin at $25 and it’s located at 20 36th Street in building 2.
