Red Hook Rec Center unveils its newly renovated gym
From hosting to sports to annual events, the new space aims to be 'a gathering space for the community"
Red Hook residents eager to hit the gym have a reason to celebrate today. Another major part of the Red Hook Recreation Center’s ongoing renovation has been completed.
On Tuesday, NYC Parks cut the ribbon to the new facility at 155 Bay Street, which includes new maplewood flooring, a modernized scoreboard, wall padding, paint and decals. The project was made possible by an anonymous $115,000 donation through the city’s Adopt-a-Park program, which lets residents help fund projects.
“From basketball and volleyball to holiday celebrations, the Red Hook Recreation Center gym is beloved by local athletes and also acts as a gathering space for the community,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue at the ceremony, according to a release.
The shiny new space provides a safe haven for local kids and hosts a variety of sports and events, including indoor soccer, pickleball (obviously), volleyball and number of annual events, including a Halloween party and the neighborhood’s holiday toy giveaway. Coming soon: new lockers.
The gym had deteriorated in recent years, with damage to the floor, minimal padding and old paint in need of a refresh.
The new gym is just one part of a multi-faceted makeover for the 87-year-old rec center, which is currently undergoing a $110 million renovation following damage sustained from Superstorm Sandy.
Last year, four ball fields reopened with new fencing, tress and a new ground that included soil, improved drainage and a new artificial turf. More soccer fields are slated to reopen this summer.
