South Slope’s Quarter bar is closing after 16 years
Known for its craft cocktails, Quarter is closing on July 15, the owners announced. Up the street, South bar is changing hands
South Slope is about to have no Quarter.
The bar that helped bring the craft cocktail scene into South Slope is closing this month after a 16-year run. Owners Joe Herron and David Moo broke the news on Instagram recently, saying the two made the decision “after a series of conversations” about differing paths for the bar and themselves.
In the end, Quarter in its current iteration is closing on Saturday, July 15. After that, Herron will transform the bar on 676 5th Ave. “into something else,” adding only that it will be a “totally different bar” after a brief closure.
“If you can, I’d really love to see as many of you as can make it before it’s over, and it would be nice to be surrounded by people who love the bar while I sob through that last day of business,” Moo wrote.
He added that “it’s been a beautiful 16 years, my friends, and even with all the problems, pitfalls and frustrations along the way, I wouldn’t trade a moment of it to have had the opportunity to build what we built there and to have known all of you while doing it.”
Quarter has been a South Slope favorite for a vibrant menu of seasonal cocktails, including gin martini mixed with rich onion brine. In 2016 it landed on Esquire’s list of “18 Best Bars in North America” for being “homey and unpretentious.”
Tributes poured into the Instagram post. “Quarter has always been a place I could be myself, a place I could be present and not have to wander away in my mind,” one fan wrote. Another wrote that Quarter “is one of my favorite bars on the planet and I’ve tried many.”

Meanwhile, two blocks up Fifth Avenue, South bar also appears to be changing hands. A post on BizBuySell titled “For Sale: Turnkey South Slope Brooklyn bar business with Yard!” shows a picture of South’s interior. With an asking price of $75,000, the listing is labeled as under contract and no longer showing. The owners were not immediately available for comment.
