‘This is dope ASF’: Jay-Z lyrics have been plastered on the Brooklyn Public Library
The library declined to comment before Friday, backing unconfirmed reports of an event Thursday relating to hip hop's 50th anniversary
Brooklyn Public Library is in a Jay-Z state of mind, but they’re not saying why — yet.
Over the past few days, lyrics from Jay-Z’s biggest hits — including “Sweet,” “Hovi Baby” and Encore” — have been pasted onto the facade of the central library’s Grand Army Plaza location. Social media has gone into a frenzy of speculation, with lots of guessing on Twitter and Reddit.
It is probably safe to assume the display is in relation to the 50th anniversary of hip hop, which the entire city is celebrating all year. The branch is closed Thursday for a “special event,” according to one tweet. We reached out to BPL to see what’s happening, but they declined to comment at this point.
“We will have an announcement on Friday,” is all they would say in an email to Brooklyn Magazine.
Hell Gate is reporting that the library is opening an exhibition dedicated to the rapper and that they’re building a replica of his Baseline Studios. Parts of the library, like the “new and noteworthy” section are closed for what’s likely a party Thursday evening.
The library has been holding events celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip hop all summer.
We’ll keep you posted.
