How to get your limited edition Jay-Z library card
13 limited edition library cards featuring art from Jay-Z's iconic albums are being issued across BPL branches
It’s Jay-Z’s world, and we’re just checking out books in it.
Thirteen limited edition library cards that feature art from his iconic albums — including “The Blueprint,” “4:44” and “The Black Album” — are being issued across Brooklyn Public Library branches throughout the month of August. The BPL website has the full list of locations, with a majority of branches participating.
At the library’s Grand Army Plaza central branch, currently hosting a 40,000-square-foot temporary exhibit celebrating the Brooklyn-born rapper’s career, three card designs will be available depending on the week. This week, library members can pick up cards with the cover of “Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life”; next week, the library is handing out cards with “The Black Album” art, and for the week beginning August 21, cards with “The Blueprint” album art will be made available.
Getting one is easy, while supplies last. The BPL is telling fans to go to a branch in person to request one. The library said there’s a limit of 13 cards per person and members can only get one card of each design. Members can also keep your previously issued, non-Jay-Z cards.
The exhibit, which opened last month, has sparked a surge in signups for the library. BPL officials previously said that attendance at its Grand Army Plaza location was five times higher than average and it has garnered at least 4,000 new signups for cards. Roughly 40,000 people attended the first week of the exhibit.
The showcase, called “The Book of HOV,” delves into Jay-Z’s life, artistry, business endeavors and social justice efforts. It includes a blend of personal artifacts, archives, information, multimedia displays and interactive experiences. His Grammys awards, hard drives with his master recordings, never-before-seen photos, original show notes are all on display.
There is no set end date for the exhibit, but the staff previously told Brooklyn Magazine it will be sometime in the fall.
