HiHi Room is closing its doors after just under 4 years
The cheery Cobble Hill spot owned by the Court Street Grocers team broke the news Thursday, stunning its regulars
HiHi Room, the eclectic Cobble Hill sit-down restaurant from the Court Street Grocers owners, is closing after just shy of four years.
The restaurant broke the news on Instagram, writing that they’ve “decided it’s time to pack up our ferns and close our doors” with its last brunch service planned for September 3.
No specific reason was offered in the post, but, obviously, operating a small business in a lingering Covid world is difficult, especially for restaurants. They hinted as much in their sign-off, writing that they “opened this little place just before the world shut down and it’s been a pretty wild ride since then, but most of all we hope we’ve provided you with the refuge and comfort that you’ve provided us with these last few years.”
Although the HiHi Room has been cheekily re-dubbed the ByeBye Room, the owners say they’re “passing” the colorful space to others and they’ve got some “exciting new stuff” that they’re working on.
The HiHi room opened in November 2019, and was an immediate hit. The southeastern-inspired menu won over diners (and the New Yorker) with spins on Cincinnati chili, pimento cheese (a.k.a Carolina caviar) and its cheeseburger with cottage fries. The restaurant also had a delicious selection of cocktails.
A commenter on Instagram wrote that Thursday’s news was the “worst day of my life.” Another added that the cheery spot’s exit will leave a tremendous hole in the neighborhood.”
