N and R trains just got a weekday boost in Brooklyn
And starting tonight, the M line will shut down until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, September 5
You’re not imagining it: Your wait for the N and R train just got a little shorter.
This week, the MTA increased midday service on the two lines, which snake through several Brooklyn neighborhoods, including Bay Ridge and Borough Park. Trains are now arriving every eight minutes instead of 10 minutes (baby steps!) between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays.
“By improving service, by running trains more frequently, no longer will we have to tell riders that they have to wait for the ‘rarely train’ or wait for the ‘never train.’ This is going to be a game changer,” said Brooklyn-based New York State Senator Andrew Goundares in a recent press conference.
The MTA said that its own surveys had “consistently included rider feedback requesting decreased wait times along the N and R lines with satisfaction rates below the systemwide average.” Riders told the agency that they would ride the subway more if wait times were less painful.
Funding for the increased service is coming from an additional $35 million added in the state budget. Roughly 180,000 straphangers use the N and R trains during the day per the MTA.
Also this week, the M line will shut down starting Wednesday, August 30. As of 9:45 p.m., there will be no M train service until 5 a.m. Tuesday, September 5.
The expanded N and R service is the latest in promised improvements to wait times on other lines, including the G, J and M trains during the weekends and the C train on weekdays.
