Coney Island Brewery is closing its Surf Ave taproom for good
The space, which opened about a decade ago, will shut down Nov. 9, citing no 'path to profitability'
Coney Island Brewery is closing its only taproom after nearly a decade in business on Surf Avenue.
The brewery announced that November 9 will be its final day, explaining in an Instagram post that it’s “made the tough business decision” to cease operations of the taproom. The beer, however, will continue to be brewed and served at area restaurants, bars and retailers.
Financial difficulties are to blame for the closure. Coney Island Brewery said the “seasonality of the area” — it’s located near Maimonides Park and Luna Park — and the high costs of operating the taproom resulted in the space not being able to turn a profit for “several years” and that it “unfortunately didn’t see a path to profitability in the future.”
“To our cherished community partners, and to every incredible guest who has visited our taproom over the past 10 unforgettable years, there are not enough words to encapsulate our gratitude,” the brewery posted. “Whether you danced like a Mermaid in the streets, rocked out to live performances, or shared a tale or two over a pint, you’ve made our journey truly special – THANK YOU for the countless memories.”
Coney Island Brewing Company started in 2007 and was purchased by Boston Beer Company in 2013. The taproom opened in 2015 and expanded four years later to fit more patrons and host events.
“Our coworkers are our top priority, so we are meeting individually with each one to help determine their best path forward,” Boston Beer Company said in a statement to Brooklyn Magazine. “As for our guests, we’d like to thank everyone who has visited us in the past and we welcome everyone to come by for one last drink with us before we close our doors.”
Fans were stunned by the news, with people commenting that they were “devastated” and “absolutely heartbroken.” Another person said it’s incredibly sad because “the Brewery has been a source of comfort, refuge & camaraderie for me personally.”
