Blue Marble Ice Cream is closing its last remaining shop Dec. 24

Brooklyn-based Blue Marble Ice Cream is closing its last remaining shop after 15 years in business.
Owners Alexis Miesen and Jennie Dundas announced that it’s with “tremendous gratitude and a bittersweet ache in our hearts” that the shop on 186 Underhill Avenue will serve its last scoop on December 24, marking an end to Blue Marble’s retail operations, which at one point had expanded to Cobble Hill, Governor’s Island, Tribeca, the Upper West Side — and even Haiti.
The Underhill shop was Blue Marble’s second Brooklyn brick-and-mortar when it opened in May 2008. The spot was built with a $15,000 budget with materials “from the set of a theater production” that Dundas was starring in, according to the co-founders’ statement.
Covid-19 arrived in 2020, though, upending its business and changing everything. Despite scraping by in 2020 and 2021, this year proved to be its toughest.
“We see many colleagues, from retailers to producers, in dire positions. Supermarkets have gone bankrupt, re-launched, and closed again. Ice cream brands across the country have gone belly-up or been swallowed at unfavorable terms by bigger beasts — some right here in New York,” the pair said, perhaps in a nod to Ample Hills.
“It has been our honor to serve you all these years. We could have achieved nothing without you,” they wrote. The brand will still be available in grocery stores and at select restaurants.
“You kept us going through the pandemic with your window,” one wrote. “Blue Marble is more than just an ice cream shop but truly a space that brings people together. You will be greatly missed.”
