Tony Hawk is working to bring four skateparks to Brooklyn and the Bronx

Tony Hawk, the pro skateboarder, is helping to develop four skateparks to New York City, including two in Brooklyn.

Hawk’s nonprofit Skatepark Project, which sets up parks in underserved neighborhoods across the country, will remodel the existing Brower Skatepark in Crown Heights to make it more accessible to skateboarders with input from the community.

Even bigger will be the brand new Brooklyn Skate Garden, which has been seeking funding for the past several years to build a skatepark to honor the late pro skater Pablo Ramirez. Hawk and his project will build a completely new 40,000-square foot park situated at Mount Prospect Park, along Eastern Parkway between the Library and the Botanic Garden.

“Skateboarding brings people together, creating long-lasting friendships, builds determination and confidence, and all while promoting a healthy lifestyle,” Hawk said in a statement announcing the projects.

In addition to custom, poured-in concrete for skaters to glide on, the park will also provide seating, lighting and community garden space, according to mock-ups shown on the organizer’s website. “We are forever thankful to all of the volunteers and NYC Skaters who have supported us by attending our events and getting behind our mission since 2019,” the group said in a statement.

Both parks will be complete by 2027 as a public-private partnership to the tune of $24 million, which also includes funding for two additional skateparks in the Bronx — one new one and a remodeling of the Soundview Skatepark.
